Mysterious Photos

In an effort to share the approximately 60,000 contact squares we have from our travels shooting for magazines, I have launched a creativity project called "Mysterious Photos" on Etsy. Follow the sets of photos as they ship at #mysteriousphotos on Instagram.

Broadview Edition of MAry Hayden Green Pike's "Ida May"

Xilita

Our photographs of Las Posas, a surrealist home and garden in Central Mexico, can be found in this month's Architectural Digest France.

Tiong Bahru Neighbors

Morgan & Owens submitted an artist's statement to the collection Contemporary Art as Political Practice in Singapore, edited by Shirley Chew and Wernmei Yong Ade. I want to share this project, as it somewhat succintly summarizes our ideas about lived experience, politics, and portraiture, and it is James and I's only shared by-line to date! You can download our chapter, here.

"Lighten Up America!"

Morgan & Owens shot around Cape Cod last October for a cookbook of American vernacular foods called Lighten Up America! by Allison Fishman Task and Cooking Light, out today. These recipes don't look guilt-free to me, but a beautiful job done by the publishers and design teams at Oxmoor House.

Gallery show

My favorite image from a series of photographic reflections in Hawthorne's Concord, "A Spiritual Medium," is up at the the 331 Gallery in Beacon, as part of their show: "A Spirited Artist." I have been photographing passages from the American Notebooks around the Old Manse since 2009.

We've Moved!

We have moved to a charming cottage in Beacon, New York, the coolest town in the Hudson River Valley. Our photo studio is on the second floor of Spire Studios, just up Beekman street from DIA and the train station.

DH and Daguerreotypes at NEMLA

I'll be giving TWO papers at NEMLA in Boston this weekend:

“Understanding Slavery in Singapore: American Archival Research in Global Context” at “The Literary Interventions of the Digital Humanities,” a pecha-kucha presentation at 3:15 on Saturday,

and “Daguerreotyped on my Mind”: Photographic Writing in the Literature of Abolition,” at “Fighting Words: Aesthetic Protests in Nineteenth-Century Literature,” at 8:30 am on Sunday.

Hello Worcester! Hello 1850s!

For the next six months I will be in dedicated archival mode as I complete the research for my book project, Letters of Light, at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Massachusetts, on a long term grant from the AAS and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Morgan & Owens Interview

An article about Morgan & Owens, "On the Move," appeared at the Wonderful Machine blog over the holidays. Find it here.

"It might seem like it should, but we really don’t see any difference in shooting in Jackson, Mississippi or Penang, Malaysia.  Take our word for it — they are the same subject, different verse."

My Blue-eyed Nathaniel

Nathaniel James Owens arrived on May 19th at 4:38pm in Singapore.
